SoftWeb-PDN.com is a hit with programmers

October 23rd, 2008 filed under Tech

Since launching in August of 2004, SoftWeb-PDN.com has seen a fast growing stream of traffic and been praised on numerous developer’s forums as a solid centralized resource for programmers.

“As a software and webware programmer who uses many different languages, I was spending countless hours each week searching for information or resources to improve my projects. That’s time I wasn’t spending on coding. This site began as a personal project for me to centralize my most frequently used research haunts in one location in an attempt to cut down on the time I spent searching, to increase the time I’d have for developing. I’m glad others are finding it of use as well.” said Scott Bannon, creator of SoftWeb-PDN.com

SoftWeb-PDN.com doesn’t offer much that you can’t find elsewhere on the net, though there are several interesting articles regarding various types of programming techniques published by Scott Bannon on the site, but since it pulls information from dozens of programming and developing resources and then presents it in a well structured manner it’s easy to understand why coders around the world prefer this “one stop shopping” approach over visiting all of those resources individually. Best of all, it’s completely free to use.

Oil or Grease Lubrication?

October 20th, 2008 filed under Tech

A lubricating grease is usually a mixture of 85 to 90 percent
mineral oil or synthetic oil together with a thickener. In a
majority of all greases, the thickener is a metallic soap. One
example is lithium stearate for lithium soap.

The function of the thickener, the metallic soap, is to hold
the lubricating oil in a semi-liquid state for easier handling.

When there is rise in temperature, the oil bleeds out from the
thickener and functions as a lubricating agent. When the
temperature drops again, the thickener soaks up the oil again
to become semi-solid once more.

The type of grease chosen for a particular bearing lubrication
application must therefore be chosen very carefully. High
temperature grease used in low temperature applications may
cause the bearings to seize due to lack of lubrication because
the oil does not bleed out. The common types of grease in use
for rolling contact bearings are the calcium, sodium and
lithium greases.

Calcium Soap Greases

These do not dissolve in water. They are recommended for
installations exposed to water at temperatures below 60 degree C.
They offer good protection against salt water in marine
environments.

Sodium Soap Greases

Also called soda greases, they may be utilized over a wide range
of temperatures up to 120 degree C. However, if too much water
penetrates into the bearings, there is a risk that the grease
will be washed out and the lubricating properties become
deteriorated.

Lithium Soap Greases

These have excellent resistance to high temperatures. They can
also be used over a wider range of temperatures from -50 to 150
degree C. They are not water soluble.

Additives are also added to some greases to improve their
properties. Some examples of these additives are anti-rust,
anti-oxidants, extreme pressure additives, and stabilizers.

Although it is very convenient to use grease for lubrication of
rolling contact bearings, where some bearings come pre-packed
with grease ready for use, grease lubrication becomes unsuitable
if the operating temperature becomes high.

The high temperature may be because of high ambient temperature
environment, or because the heat evolved in the bearing due to
friction from high speed or heavy loading. Sometimes the use of
oil becomes more logical if the lubricating intervals for grease
lubrication becomes too short, perhaps due to leakage from seals.

In oil lubrication, the heat generated from the bearings are
able to be transfered to a larger volume of oil which in turn
can be pumped through heat exchangers for cooling. In this way,
the oil functions both as a lubricating agent as well as a
cooling agent.

Oils can also have additives to improve their properties. Some
examples are anti-oxidants, corrosion protection additives,
anti-foaming additives, surface tension additives, wetting agents,
and extreme pressure additives. These additives are put in
according to the application of the oil.

Compared to greases, oils can enable bearings to be operated at
a wider range of temperatures. However, there are limits to this,
especially at higher temperatures. At high temperatures of 90
degree C and above, mineral oils oxidize rapidly and they lose
their properties to lubricate. Synthetic oils are increasingly
being used for higher temperature applications.

Which to use? Oil or grease? The choice is yours!

Is This Love or Emotional Dependency?
Margaret Paul, Ph.D.

One of my clients, whose ex-girlfriend recently broke up with him, asked me the following question:

“I think I still love her, but is this love or just emotional dependency? Many times I ask myself if falling in love comes from the wounded self because (for me at least) it feels as if I can’t live without the other person. When I give love from the heart I don’t expect anything back, but when I fall in love I think this is a different energy.”

Falling in love can come from two different inner states. When you fall in love from the wounded self - the ego self - you are in love with how the other person loves you. You are handing over to the other person the responsibility for your self-worth and wellbeing, and if he or she does a good job of attending to you in the way you want to be attended to, then you may say you are “in love.” However, it is not so much the person you love, but how he or she loves you. When it feels as if you can’t live without the other person, it is emotional dependency. The part of you that is “in love” is really a child or adolescent who is needy for love because you are not giving love to yourself or to others. There is an emptiness inside that you expect someone else to fill, because you are not taking responsibility for your own feelings of self-worth. You are attaching your worth to another’s love, which is why you can’t live without that person.

When you fall in love as a loving adult instead of as a wounded, needy child or adolescent, your need for the relationship is totally different. As a loving adult, you have learned how to fill yourself with love and define your own worth. Instead of needing someone to fill you and make you feel lovable and worthy, you already feel worthy and full of love. You experience this inner fullness because you have learned how to take full responsibility for your own feelings and needs, and you have learned to fill yourself with love from a Divine Source. This fullness overflows and you want to share this love with another person, another loving adult who is also filled with love. Your desire is to share love rather than to get love.

The kind of person you will pick will be totally different when a loving adult is choosing than when your wounded self is choosing. The people we pick have a similar level of woundedness and a similar level of emotional health. Obviously, the more you have done your inner work to connect with Divine Love and bring that love within to take loving care of yourself, the more you will be attracted to someone also does this.

When you pick from your wounded self, you will pick someone whom you believe wants the job of filling you up. The problem is that the other person may be attempting to fill you up in the hopes that you will also fill up him or her. Two people who each want to get love rather than share love will eventually find themselves very disappointed with each other. They will each blame the other for not loving them in the way they want to be loved. When relationships break up, it is often because one or both partners are not taking responsibility for their own feelings and self-worth and are blaming the other for their resulting unhappiness.

If you are so attached to someone that you feel you can’t live without that person, try learning to give to yourself and others what it is you want from this person. Your job is to become the person to yourself that you want the other person to be. Then you will be able to be “in love” rather than “in need.” You will be able to love another person for who he or she is rather than for what this person can do for you. Instead of needing to get love, you can give love from the heart for the joy of it and feel filled in the giving.

Counseling: When to Seek Expert Help

October 18th, 2008 filed under Tech

Though counseling is well known and proved to help people with their issues, many still hesitate to receive expert advice from counselors. Are you in need of expert advice?
Though counseling is well known and proved to help people with their issues, many still hesitate to receive expert advice from counselors. Are you in need of expert advice? The following information will help you understand what counseling is and how it can help you, plus explain when you should get a counselor’s point of view and advice on your issues.

A counselor is someone (usually with a major in psychology) who specializes and is qualified to help others better understand their issues and assist them in finding the best solutions to their problems. Most people feel offended when counseling is suggested because they feel that they are being portrayed as a “crazy” person. Seeking expert advice and input on the events that take place in your life does not define you as crazy or less knowledgeable than anyone else. In fact, accepting that you are experiencing a difficult situation in your life defines you as more knowledgeable, because you care enough about yourself and your issues to find successful solutions.

Too many people mistake counselors with psychics or miracle workers. The truth is, no one knows what is really going to happen in your future beforehand, nor can anyone make things 100% better for you. You hold that power. Counselors are dedicated to giving you good guidance and advice on how to make your troubling issues better, so that you can live happier and get what you need and deserve from the things and the people in your life. A counselor will also assist you in becoming a better friend to yourself, teaching you self-help methods that will help you love yourself more so that you can achieve your dreams and goals. Keep in mind that there is no need to feel embarrassed or afraid to talk about anything with your counselor. Counselors do not and will not judge you. Their only desire is to get all the information that is necessary from you, so that they can help you in everyway they can.

There are many cases where someone wants professional help, but does not know when it is the right time to get it. The right time to receive expert assistance is when you feel you cannot solve your problems on your own even though you have tried on numerous occasions, or whenever you feel the need and desire for professional input. You know when the right time is, so when you get that feeling, be sure to act on it right away before you give your insecurities and/or doubts about counseling time to come to surface, which will most likely cause you to back off and change your mind. If you do start to get doubts, just fight it by keeping in mind of why you considered expert help in the first place. By ignoring your own cries for attention and assistance, will only make your issue worse over time and leave you more frustrated than you were to begin with. So listen to yourself and trust yourself.

Being counseled in person can be very intimidating or scary at first, which is why it is so wonderful that there are other counseling options today. If you are not ready for a face-to-face session, do not let it discourage you from getting professional advice and help. There are other methods of counseling you can try, such as e-mail sessions, telephone sessions and chat sessions. Choose whichever makes you feel most secure and comfortable. Know that every issue varies. Some issues may require face-to-face counseling from the start, such as couple’s therapy. Remember that you need and deserve a counselor who will be non-judgmental, understanding, patient and helpful, so if you ever feel that you are not getting what you need, discontinue seeing your counselor and find one that will satisfy you.

One important thing to mention is that your psychologist/counselor cannot work on your issue alone. It requires teamwork. If you want real and true helpful assistance on your issues, then you need to start by helping out your advisor first. Help him or her by giving as much information as you can. Release your emotions and let them know how you feel about those emotions. You do not have to let everything out at once, but be sure to be as informative as you can, so that your expert advisor can gain all the knowledge they can about you and your issue and be more capable of giving the advice that will work best for you. You deserve to learn and know the root of your problem, how it developed, why it developed and how you can make it better, whether it is a relationship issue, sexual issue, or any other personal matter. With the support and expertise of your chosen counseling psychologist, your life and the events that take place in it, will become more clear and understanding, as well as happier and more successful.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help

Hypnotherapy is the process of using hypnosis to unlock the capacity of the unconscious mind to bring about therapeutic changes by modifying deeply-held assumptions, fears and misconceptions.

The issues that prompt people to turn to hypnotherapy for assistance include:

Phobias
Pain management
Panic attacks
Performance enhancement
Habits - e.g. smoking
Obsessive Compulsive Disorders
Stress management
Performance anxiety
Insomnia
Confidence, self-esteem and assertiveness

What Hypnosis Is

Hypnosis is a natural state of mind, enhanced by deep mental and physical relaxation. Without knowing it everyone drifts into and out of mild hypnotic states daily. These periods of time are commonly referred to as “day-dreams” or “running on autopilot”.

Hypnosis has nothing to do with being asleep or unconscious in any way. You are able to hear and remember everything, and will know exactly what’s going on.

People often worry that, under hypnosis, they can be made to do things they would not ordinarily agree to. This is incorrect: you remain in control all the time and cannot be made to do things that you genuinely object to.

Participants in entertainment and stage hypnosis shows are fully aware that they will be asked to act in silly ways, and they implicitly agree to this at some level of their mind.

Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is simply the process of using hypnosis to ‘unlock’ or access the unconscious mind, and to bring about therapeutic changes by modifying deeply-held assumptions, fears and misconceptions within it.

There are two forms of hypnotherapy:

Suggestion Hypnotherapy or Clinical Hypnotherapy

The hypnotherapist guides the client into a relaxed state and enlists the power of the client’s own imagination using a wide range of techniques from story-telling, metaphor or symbolism to the use of direct suggestions for beneficial change.

Analytical Hypnotherapy or Hypnoanalysis

This therapy is rather more intense and requires several sessions. It involves an in-depth analysis of the individual’s inner fears, blocked and unresolved feelings and repressed memories and is carried out in a quiet and gentle way allowing the memories and emotion to flow and release anger, fear and hurt of the past.

Building Web Sites Using Web Templates

October 14th, 2008 filed under Universe Of Webs

Gone are the days when you had to rely on a web-designer to design your websites. New technologies with innovative ideas have brought out a new variant to this trend in the form of ready to use website templates.

So what are web templates?

Well, to put it in a simple way, web templates are nothing but readymade web-pages that can be used to create websites in seconds! How you ask? Web templates act as html coded dummy web pages that contain model content. Now these templates can be edited with ease (to add content, graphics, logo, pictures etc) to create professional web pages in less time.

How to edit web templates

Now the next possible question that arises is as how to edit the web templates; isn’t it? That’s simple! Most web templates are editable and can be edited using popular html editors like FrontPage, DreamWeaver, GoLive and Photoshop. These html editors are easy to use and have a friendly interface. You need not be a pro to use them. Anyway in case anyone finds the editing part difficult they can always go for template customization services that are provided by most web template providers.

Are web templates really that green?

As a matter of fact, web templates can really help you save up lots of money and time and best of all help you do professional work. Just imagine hiring a web designer to design your website. As most of you must be aware, a web designer can charge you anything between $50 to $200 for designing a single web-page! And then there is the time factor. Usually web-designers take a minimum of 10 -15 days to complete a website. Here’s where web templates come to the rescue.

Using a web template to create a website would cost you anything around $20 - $40 and that’s not all; websites designed using web templates could be over within a day after editing and pasting graphics and will look professional too! So now it doesn’t take an extraordinary mind to figure out which is more lucrative.

What about Flash websites?

Designing a flash website is a real pain and might take lots of time and money. But in case you believe in playing it smart your best bet would be to go for flash website templates. There are many template websites that offer flash website templates of high quality at low costs. All you need to do is insert content and you are ready to go!

Hey wait a minute I need to create a copyrighted website!

No problem! Almost all website template providers offer an option of copyrighted to non-copyrighted templates. The major different between a copyrighted and a non copyrighted template is the fact that copyrighted templates are sold only once and the purchaser of the copyrighted template gets all user rights over it whereas in a non copyrighted template the rights of usage stays with the template ownership company and can be sold again and again. So in case you need to create a copyrighted website that is unique be sure to go for copyrighted website templates.

How do I find out a quality template from an inferior one?

Quality web templates have the following features;

  1. Web-templates should be editable

  2. Web templates should be compatible with popular html editors

  3. The coding should be such that there is no alteration in the structure of the template on content/graphic insertion

  4. The web template should be easy to upload

  5. A webpage generated by a web template should download with ease in any browser

So in case your templates don’t comply with the above, you can be sure they are of inferior quality. Website templates are a great and easy way to host your website. So in case you are game, go for good web template providers. Some good online website template provides are www.buytemplates.net, freewebtemplates.com, dreamweaver-templates.net and trendytemplates.com.

Spreading word-of-mouth advertising through forums

October 12th, 2008 filed under Universe Of Webs

As many webmasters and regular web-surfers would know, an online forum community is a great place to meet large groups of people online. Forums provide a means through which visitors to a website can interact with one another and exchange ideas or reviews of products or just talk about anything under the sun. Acute marketers and webmasters will already know that these communities are often excellent places for free advertising.

Word-of-mouth advertising can be used to refer to advertising by which people pass on the marketing message through communication between people. A forum community provides just the setting for word-of-mouth advertising to spread due to its nature of discussion and community structure. Any one member who joins the community is entitled to post his/her thoughts by creating new forum threads or to reply to others or counter someone else’s arguments. Every post that is made is an opportunity to spread some word-of-mouth advertising. This is often done through forum profiles and signatures. A signature is a small description of the member. Most forum communities have no qualms about members posting some self-advertising messages in their signatures, as long as the advert is not too obtrusive. Therefore, forum members can make use of their signatures to post links to their websites or links to products that they are selling. By participating actively in forum communities, one can easily reach a large audience. Because everyone on the forum who participates in the discussion is reading the posts of all members in the discussion as well as signatures, an attractive link will arouse their interests and incite them to click on the link to go to your advertised site. Imagine the impact that this would have in a forum community with thousands of members and your signature appearing in thousands of posts. The boundaries in this form of word-of-mouth advertising is limitless as it largely depends on how much you post and participate in the discussions. The more you participate engagingly, the more times your links appear and the more chances people get to see and interest them to view your site.

Of course, care must be taken to ensure that you are following the proper etiquette as specified by the forum community and that you do not spam the forums. Spamming happens when someone joins in every discussion and posts useless comments that are not constructive. Spammers are often penalized by being banned from the forum for spamming their links in the forum.
