Botox Therapy - the Facts
Botox is now fashionable amongst Sydney’s stylish crowd and in fact it has become a beauty routine essential for those in the city.
All the same I never cease to be amazed when I hear the plethora of myths that surround this treatment.
Here are some of the more errors which I hear all the time at Star Cosmetic Medicine, where I practise as a physician.
Misunderstanding # 1: I may not have the ability to use my facial muscles normally!
Beneath the skin of the face are about 60 muscles. Their extensive use can result in fine lines to appear. When an excess of Botox is injected the muscles of expression may become too relaxed. The amount used by almost all doctors make you appear well rested, yet you will still appear every bit as animated.
Indeed the right quantity of Botox in the right site means one should achieve a reduction in the lines without reducing facial expression.

Misunderstanding # 2: Botox is toxic!
Actually there is some truth in this statement. Botulinum Toxin Type A is the correct medical terminology. An overdose can end up in a decrease in muscle tone and can even cause sickness.
Pharmacists have a well known expression that states ‘everything is a poison - it all depends on the dose’. A large amount of any drug may induce illness. Water can be a poison if you drink enough.
Misunderstanding # 3: It will sting!
The needles used at Star Cosmetic Medicine have a diameter less than your hair. Some people compare the shots to bug bites. Definitely not as bad as having a vaccination.
Misunderstanding # 4: I might lose sensation in my face!
False. Botox affects the neuromuscular junction, and not on the nerves of sensation. Botox just targets the ability to relax muscular tissues.
Misunderstanding # 5. You cannot stop having Botox or else you might age quicker than before!
Once More this is just untrue.
One treatment will last around three months. Further injections tend to last longer. The wrinkles will slowly return as the muscle returns to normal. But they will certainly be no more noticeable than when you began.
Even if you do not have Botox treatments again - those lines will probably be a little less severe than if you hadn’t undergone the procedure. This is mainly the case because you have allowed your skin to have a ‘wrinkle holiday’ during the therapy.
