Brussels Commissioner of Competition Requested to Transfer Merger Enquiry to the UK Government

January 13th, 2010 filed under Better Telecommunication, Consumer Issues, Tech

Proposals for T-Mobile and Orange merger have raised many eyebrows, as it is going to have a great impact on the UK mobile market due to both the companies having a large control of market share.

Consumer groups have been arguing that it is imperative that the possible consequences of the merger are studied in advance. Consumer Focus and the Communications Consumer Panel have raised the issue of competition being hindered because of the merger. They claimed that the merger would discourage innovation, considering the fact that the new company would control a very large part of market share and broadband spectrum.

These groups believe that the merger can stall the development of new 3G technology. Mobile virtual network operators may also suffer, considering they do not own any network but lease network from others.

All these concerns were raised by these groups in a joint letter sent to Brussels commissioner of competition, who currently has jurisdiction on the matter. The letter argues that the British market is going to be affected by the merger and thus an enquiry should be conducted immediately by the British authorities. They have asked the commissioner to transfer the matter to the UK government that can then hand over the work to the Office of Fair Trading and the Competition Commission.

Before this, consumer body Which? had also stated that such an investigation has become a great necessity in the context of this deal.

Mobile Broadband Cannot Be Monitored By Anti-piracy Law Provisions

December 22nd, 2009 filed under Better Telecommunication, Consumer Issues, Tech

The government’s controversial anti-piracy law will not be an effective measure to counter illegal downloads and other unauthorised online behaviour. This was the purport of a statement made by technology business news website ZDNet UK.

ZDNet has stated that the anti-piracy measures will fail to stop offenders who use a mobile broadband system to browse the internet. This is because mobile broadband providers normally assign one public IP address to a group of users whose use originates from that id. It is impossible to isolate an individual who is involved in illegal file sharing from this group of users.

As the anti-piracy law requires issue of warnings first and then temporary disconnection of account if necessary, identification of the individual offender is a prerequisite for the law to work effectively. This identification will not be possible in case of mobile broadband due to the multiple-user factor.

As mobile broadband use continues to increase in proportion to the boom in sales of iPhones, smartphones and other mobile enabled gadgets, an effective system for tracking illegal users in this mobile environment is required.

The anti-piracy law has already been the butt of much criticism from industry sources and public alike. A petition against the law was recently sent to Downing Street with thousands of signatures. Ever since it was announced, the law has been considered as unfair and disproportionately harsh on the offender. In fact, a number of industry players refused to put necessary systems in place to track usage, saying that this would be a serious invasion of customer privacy.

If you have not yet joined the ranks of mobile internet users, there are a number of points to consider when choosing a mobile broadband option. Take a look at all the plans offered by the various operators, I found some excellent dongle broadband offers at Mobile Broadband Genie. You will be given all the information you need about each supplier on their comparative table of UK broadband providers to help guide you through the decision process.

ATT Uverse Code & ATT Uverse Review

May 3rd, 2009 filed under Better Telecommunication, Tech

I went online and executed a few searches for what I would be getting with ATT U-verse in comparison with what my other company provided, the station line up and the cost. There were many packages offered. I determined that I liked the middle bundle which offered more than 210 channels in addition to 40 premium stations, every local station, and thirty-four digital music channels. It also included 3 receivers, one with DVR at no extra charge. The charge for the plan (without my discount) cost $68 (+ $25 for Internet). I was paying $70 a month to TW for less stations and only premium channel. I did not get a digital video recorder - only 1 receiver. Also, if you are looking for an ATT U-verse Code, there are some affiliates of AT&T that you are able to get tasty deals with.

There was really zero difficulty in determining that AT&T represented the top choice, and so I made the telephone call and settled my order. The AT&T installer came to our condo on the afternoon we scheduled. I was given a 2 hour range to be in the area and he came 2 hours past that. I had ordered two receivers, he arrived with only the digital video recorder. He informed me to phone the central office and schedule a different day for the 2nd device, since his info showed I ordered 1 and that was all they shipped him out with. The guy did work rapidly and once the job was all done he spent some time to explain how the DVR and remote control worked. He also unplugged the DSL and made a wireless connection, made certain I could get on to the Net, and departed.

It has been a month now since ATT U-verse was installed. I am really happy with the A300 bundle and the variety of channels. Everything is easy to use and I love the DVR. You never need to miss a show you enjoy since you just tape them and watch them when you have time. The Net is another story. For you guys who aren’t PC savvy it could be a really frustrating experience, especially the first instance you lose your connection, it does not reconnect itself, and you can’t work out how to repair it. The best thing you could do when you order the service is make certain you ask the tech about the wireless connection, how it works and what you will do if and when it disconnects.

Telef

LTE is the next big thing in mobile communication. With significantly higher bit rates of around 140Mb, LTE aims at meeting the ever-increasing requirement for high-speed mobile broadband. The technology is bound to become popular as it supports bandwidth-heavy applications like file sharing, video-on-demand and broadband internet. However, the big question is when the users can enjoy the benefits of this technology (click for more info on the latest mobile broadband prices).

The good news is that the wait is not very long. Although, no telecom provider has yet confirmed a timeframe for a UK rollout, GSMA has reported that 26 providers worldwide have hinted of an LTE rollout in 2010.

The Spanish telco, Telefnica, which owns O2, has also conducted its first 4G LTE tests at its facility in Madrid. Not only does this signal an introduction of LTE in the near future, it also expresses the commitment of Telefnica towards innovation and maintaining a strong hold on the market.

The tests, which consisted of a VoIP call, a video call, a video conference, and data transfers, using LTE, showed the ability of the technology to reach speeds upwards of 100Mb. This is over 10 times the speed offered by current mobile broadband networks, and highlights the potential of LTE.

Telefnica said after the tests, that the results would be useful in planning the next steps for LTE development.

Ethernet over Copper - no More Bonded T1

April 8th, 2009 filed under Better Telecommunication, Marketing

When our business was growing fast, it became obvious that we required additional bandwidth. Our T1 line just wasn’t cutting it any longer. We had to upgrade.

Being in charge of IT, I started renegotiating our current contract. Luckily our company’s 1 year term was almost over, so our company was able to investigate different alternatives.

The most apparent answer would have been to move from a single t1 to a bonded T1. Yet with our current growth rate, pretty soon that also would not be enough.

Our sales rep with this bandwidth provider (who will remain nameless here) of course was happy to point me to a bigger and far more expensive solution: a DS3 (T3 line) with a capacity of 45 megabits per second. Obviously that would be bandwidth enough taking our projected growth into consideration, it was possibly even a bit of an overkill. And monthly cost was in the higher 4 digit figures, something my boss wasn’t too happy with of course.

With due diligence I did some more research until I found something that sounded too good to be true. A new technology (or at least new to me) which enables carriers to deliver bandwidth via an Ethernet port over POTS lines, also called Ethernet over Copper. The pricing was super; we were able to get a 10 meg port for less than a bonded t1!

And another important benefit of carrier ethernet is the scalability. It is possible to add bandwidth by simply ordering more, in small incremental steps of a few megabit, even all the way up to a gigabit Ethernet circuit.

Be sure to shop around with several carriers and make sure you are aware of new technologies (or use a telecom consultant that is).

It’s All About Dongles

December 8th, 2008 filed under Better Telecommunication, Consumer Issues, Tech

It’s got to be one of the silliest names for a device that I’ve come across, I mean whoever came up with ‘dongle’ for a name; it just sounds a bit daft. Having said that though the broadband dongle is for me certainly one of the most lovable of gadgetry mobile things around. Can you actually call a usb dongle lovable? Well anyway I think it is a lovely, small, shiny device.

We want high-speed internet on the move and that’s precisely what a dongle gives us. A dongle is a portable modem that plugs into the USB port of your laptop or computer and provides internet access via the 3G mobile network. They are also known as mobile modems or commonly as a usb dongle. Another means of internet access on the move could be your mobile phone, but this is invariably slow and expensive. The dongle on the other hand is quite simply a neat little device that plugs into your laptop and without too much of a kafuffle gives you access to 3g mobile internet access.

Dongles are being hailed as the next big thing in broadband, so much so that some consider it may even replace fixed-line as the most popular medium for accessing the internet. Taking into account the rising popularity and demand for mobile broadband and the fact that a lot of us now have a preference for mobile phones rather than a landline in our households, the demise of the fixed line may well be on the horizon. Silly name or not the dongle looks like it’s here to stay for awhile, well at least till the next big thing in mobile broadband emerges.
