Obesity Has Many Effects on the Body

When an individual is more than 20 percent over their ideal body weight, doctors consider the person to be obese. Several factors can lead to obesity, including lack of exercise, genetics, psychological problems and lack of knowledge about nutrition There are various obesity effects, including both physical and emotional effects.

Obesity can lead to type 2 diabetes, which occurs when the body does not produce insulin normally. Insulin is vital in regulating blood sugar. Without the correct levels in the body, several problems can occur.

Obesity effects many of the body’s organs. With more weight for the body to carry around, it places more demands on the heart and lungs. This can cause various types of cardiovascular problems, including irregular heartbeats and shortness of breath.

Many obese people have become overweight by eating unhealthy foods, which are high in fat and cholesterol. This can lead to blocked arteries and the possibility of a heart attack or stroke. High blood pressure is also more common in people who are obese.

Being obese is also considered a risk factor for developing certain types of cancer, such as colon cancer. Another disease associated with obesity is sleep apnea. This occurs when the airway becomes obstructed, often due to extra weight in the face and neck. Carrying around extra weight can also be hard on the joints and lead to pain in back.

It’s important to realize obesity effects are not just physical. Emotional problems may develop. Depression and a lack of self esteem are common in individuals who are obese. Some individuals withdrawal from activities and friends because they are ashamed of their weight problem.

The good news is, in many cases, obesity can be reduced. Supervised weight loss programs, medication, exercise and behavior modification all may help treat obesity.
